This is phase five of a six-year plan to expand pre-kindergarten to all Mecklenburg four-year-olds. It is an incredible opportunity to provide a free high-quality educational experience for all children in Mecklenburg County in order to prepare them for kindergarten and school success.

We are now accepting applications from all star-licensed centers (excludes centers located in residences) in Mecklenburg County that are interested in becoming a MECK Pre-K site beginning Fall 2023 for the 2023-2024 school year. Site applications will be available online at www.MeckPreK.org beginning Thursday, October 27, 2022. Original, hard-copy, completed applications are due in the MECK Pre-K Office located at 601 East 5th St, Suite 200, Charlotte, NC 28202 by December 20th, 2022, no later than 4:00 p.m.

Please note that in order to be considered for a MECK Pre-K classroom, your site must complete all of the following steps:

Step 1: Hold a star rated license (temporary, 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5).

Step 2: Have a 90% or higher license compliance history (no violations for child/staff ratio, supervision, or child maltreatment) for the past 18 months

Step 3: Guarantee to adhere to MECK Pre-K Policies.

Step 4: Guarantee transportation and wrap-around care for ALL MECK Pre-K students placed at your site if you indicate on your application that you provide these services.

Step 5: Guarantee to operate a MECK Pre-K classroom for 6.5 hours/day, 10 months per year and follow the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools calendar.

Step 6: Have an available classroom licensed for a minimum of 20 children; it must be a closed room with a restroom and sink. (Please note: the maximum number of students MECK Pre-K puts in a single classroom is 18, with a 1:9 ratio. MECK Pre-K provides all furnishings and equipment for the room and because some of it is large, we seek an adequate size space to place our classrooms.)

Step 7: Have at least one floater working full time at the site.

Step 8: Guarantee to have a Site Administrator on-site to monitor the MECK Pre-K program during the MECK Pre-K hours of operation (Site Administrator must hold a Principal License or Level III NC Early Childhood Administrator Credential).
