Applying for MECK Pre-K

You can now apply online on a computer, tablet or smartphone. If you are unable to apply online, contact us to request an application. We’re here to help!

Upload Documents

MECK Pre-K requires certain documents to verify your child’s eligibility. You can securely upload these to the online application. Your application will not be complete until you have provided all required documentation (listed below).

Check Your Mailbox

You will receive an email or letter notifying you that your child is officially accepted into MECK Pre-K! Be sure to share the news with your friends and neighbors by posting on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube!

If you need help with your application, contact us to speak to a MECK Pre-K staff member or make an appointment to visit our office. Masks are required for in-person visits.

To apply for MECK Pre-K, your child must be four years old on or before August 31 of that school year and be a resident of Mecklenburg County. Priority will be given to families who earn at or below 400% of the federal poverty level.

The following documents are required for enrollment:

Proof of Child's Date of Birth and Legal Name

Please submit one of the following documents. Document must have child’s legal name and birth date:

  • Original or Photocopy of Birth Certificate
  •  Passport
  •  State-Issued Identification Document
  •  US Department of State (I-94 Arrival/Departure Record)
  • Refugee Resettlement Letter (Local sponsoring agency, US Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Refugee Resettlement)*
  • Decree of Adoption
  • Life Insurance Policy
  • A certified copy of any medical record of the child’s birth issued by the treating physician or the hospital in which the child was born
  • A certified copy of a birth certificate issued by a church, mosque, temple, or other religious institution that maintains birth records of its members
  • Previously verified school record

Proof of Parent Identity

Please submit one of the following documents:

• Any form of Government or State photo identification
• State issued driver’s license
• State issued ID card
• Passport or Passport Card

Current Proof of Mecklenburg County Residency (minimum two documents)

Please submit one of the following documents:

  • Copy of residential deed OR record of most recent residential mortgage statement
  • Notarized Residency Affidavit [link to download form] AND copy of mortgage statement, deed or lease from homeowner/leaseholder affirming tenancy
  • Copy of residential lease
  • HUD closing statement

Also, please submit one of the following documents:

• Any ONE utility bill or work order dated within the past 30 days, including: gas, water, electric, telephone, OR cable

• Valid North Carolina Driver’s License OR Valid North Carolina Identification Card

• Dated within the past 30 days: Payroll Stub, Bank Statement OR Credit Card Statement

• Current Vehicle Registration

• Dated within the past year: Vehicle Tax Bill, Property Tax Bill, W-2 OR Medicaid Card

If you don’t have any of the documents above, please submit one of the following documents:

• Letter from approved agency (group home)

• Refugee resettlement letter

• Copy of Charlotte Housing Authority lease

Proof of ALL Current Household Income

Please submit one of the following documents:

  • Two Consecutive pay stubs (within past 60 days)
  • Tax returns
  • W-2 OR 1099
  • Unemployment or Disability statement
  • Child support documentation
  • SS/SSI benefit letter
  • Letter from employer

Proof of Military Status (if applicable)

Children of military families may receive priority during the enrollment process.

Please submit one of the following documents:
– Leave and Earnings Statement
– Active Military ID

These documents are required by the 30th day of school

• Current Immunization Record
• Health Assessments within one year for all students
